Emerald Wing is a live video feature on Emerald Chat that pairs a host with a co-host before the session goes live, then opens the room to an anonymous audience. Viewers watch, react, comment, and can send Karma Gifts, while the host stays in control of who is on camera and who stays in the room.
Key takeaways:
- A Wing session needs a co-host matched through the Wing Queue before it goes live. If the queue does not find one, the host can send a direct invite instead.
- Viewers join with their camera and microphone off by default, and the host cannot see or hear them. They can react, comment, and send gifts, but not join the conversation.
- If the co-host leaves mid session, the session continues. The host stays on camera and the audience stays in the room.
- A Karma Gift costs $5.99, adds 150 Karma to whichever host the viewer picks, and triggers a public alert plus a private notice to that host.
- Most of what makes Wing work, the host role, gifts, and session switches, sits behind Emerald Chat Premium.
We built Emerald Chat on one honest conversation, one person at a time and in group settings.
Wing came from a question we returned to often: what about people who are not ready to talk, but still want to be part of something real?
That is what Wing is for. A host and a co-host are matched and go live together, and anyone can join the room to watch, unseen and unheard. This is not a performance for a crowd.
It is two people who figure each other out, while a room of people watches because they want to be near a real conversation, not have one on camera themselves.
Here is how it works, from the start of a session to what a viewer sees on the other end.
How to use Emerald Wing
We get asked how Wing works once you are past the intro. Fair question.
Here is the real walkthrough, step by step, for both sides of the room.
Wing has two sides. You either go live as a host, or you watch as a viewer.
Here is what each one actually looks like, step by step.
Starting a session as a host
- Open Host mode. From the Wing tab, choose Host. This is where you set up before anything goes live.
- Set your camera and mic. Turn them on, check that they work, and decide if the room will be public or private. Public rooms show up in the Wing grid for anyone eligible to find. Private rooms are set here too, though invites into a private room are still being worked out on our end.
- Tap Join Wing Queue. This does two things at once. It starts your video stream and puts you in the same matching system Emerald Chat uses for regular 1:1 video chat, now searching for a co-host.
- Wait for a match, or send a direct invite. If the queue finds someone, the session goes live with both of you on camera. If the queue is slow, you can invite a specific user directly instead of waiting.
- Go live. Once your co-host joins, the room opens. Viewers can now find your session in the Wing grid and drop in.
- Stay in control. You can mute or remove a disruptive viewer at any point without shutting the whole session down. If your co-host leaves mid session, the room stays open and you stay on camera.
Joining as a viewer
- Open the Wing grid. Tap Watch Session to see what is live right now. If nothing is active, you will get a nudge to start your own session instead.
- Pick a session. Tap in and you join as a name, not a face. Your camera and mic stay off the whole time, and the host cannot see or hear you.
- React or comment. These are your two tools as a viewer. You are not on camera and you cannot join the conversation directly.
- Send a Karma Gift, if you want to. A gift costs $5.99, adds 150 Karma to whichever host you pick, and triggers a public alert plus a private notice to that host. After you send one, you can send that person a friend request.
- Switch sessions any time. If a room gets stale, tap to another one at random. No need to leave and start over.
Both sides need Emerald Chat Premium to fully work. Non-premium users can browse the Wing grid, but hosting, watching, and gifting all sit behind that tier.
Why a co-host, not a solo broadcast
This is the part that makes Wing different from a normal livestream. The session does not go live with one person alone on camera. It waits for a second person to join first.
Two strangers end up on camera together, which changes the whole feel of the room. This is not a performance. It is a conversation neither person fully controls.
The tradeoff is real, though. If the queue is slow, or nobody is available to match, the session cannot start.
The host has one workaround: a direct invite to a specific user, instead of a wait on the queue.
It works, but it is a patch, not a fix. It is the main obstacle between Wing and a smoother start every time.
Why the anonymity is important here
A lot of live platforms ask viewers to be visible too, chat with a name attached, a face in a thumbnail.
Wing does not.
No one watches you back.
That makes it easier to show up at all.
Some people want to talk. Some people want to be in the room.
Wing holds both, without a push toward either one.
If social anxiety has kept you on the sidelines before, Wing lets you start there instead of a conversation you are not ready for yet.
Karma Gifts and what they do
Viewers can send a Karma Gift to a host during a live session for $5.99. The gift adds 150 Karma to whichever host the viewer picked, whether that is the host or the co-host.
Two things happen right after: a public alert plays in the session with a sound effect, so everyone sees it, and the recipient gets a private notification too. Once the gift is sent, the viewer can send a friend request to whoever they gifted.
It is a small loop, watch, gift, connect, but it gives viewers a way to move from passive to active without a need to get on camera themselves.
Safety in a Wing session
Before anyone enters a session, host or viewer, Emerald Chat shows a consent notice and asks for confirmation.
- Hosts get a direct notice: sessions are public, and anything said or shown can be recorded or shared outside the platform.
- Emerald Chat cannot stop a screenshot on someone’s own device, so hosts are told to go live only if they are comfortable on camera.
- Community Guidelines still apply in full. Nudity, harassment, and illegal content lead to an immediate ban.
- Viewers join with camera and mic off by default, so there is nothing to expose.
- Comments and reactions are the only tools viewers have, and the host can mute or remove a disruptive viewer without a full shutdown of the session.
- A viewer who bullies or harasses can face removal from the session and a ban from the platform.
For a deeper safety rundown, see the guide on safe video chat on Emerald Chat. Pew Research Center’s 2023 survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults found that younger adults are more likely than older adults to talk openly about their mental health with close friends, which is part of why a moderated, lower pressure room can matter more than it looks on the surface.
Who can use Wing

Wing sits inside Emerald Chat Premium.
- Premium users can host, watch, send gifts, switch between sessions, and send friend requests after a gift.
- Non-premium users can browse the Wing grid, but the sessions themselves stay locked.
- A category filter is limited further, to Gold Status members only.
- Emerald Wing is still a work in progress, and we will release updates every now and then.
A conversation you get to watch, not perform
Wing does not turn Emerald Chat into a stage. It answers a smaller, odd question. What if two strangers in conversation could make you feel like you are in the room, without a single word from you?
That is the whole idea. A host and a co-host figure each other out in real time, and everyone else gets to lean in.
Whether Wing is for you comes down to which side of that table you want to sit on. Some days you want to talk. Some days you want to listen in on something real.
Try it for yourself
If you have never hosted before, Wing is a low pressure way to see what a live conversation feels like with someone new. A conversation with a stranger can improve your confidence more than you expect.
Set up your session, join the Wing Queue, and see who shows up on the other side. If a front row seat sounds more like your speed, open the Wing grid and drop into whatever session is live right now.
